March 3 (Reuters) - Canadian banks cut their prime lending rates on Tuesday after the Bank of Canada, the country's central bank, cut its key interest rate by a half-point to a record low of 0.5 percent.

The banks showed no reluctance to pass along the full 50- basis-point reduction in the Bank of Canada's overnight rate, in contrast to their more cautious approach in the autumn.

Bank of Montreal (BMO.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) led the pack in lowering its prime rate to 2.5 percent from 3.0 percent.

The other larger players -- Royal Bank of Canada (RY.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), TD Canada Trust (TD.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) and National Bank of Canada (NA.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) -- also cut their prime rates to 2.5 percent.

The Bank of Canada cut its key interest rate as expected, and signaled for the first time that it may resort to quantitative easing in the future.

The central bank also acknowledged that its latest projections for the Canadian economy now look optimistic in the light of the latest economic data, showing that the economy contracted at an annualized rate of 3.4 percent in the fourth quarter.

嗯，降息的确对贷款产品来说是好事啊。在这里我只是想对持有与Prime有直接关系的投资产品的朋友提个醒，特别是持有BMO Variable Rate GIC这个产品的朋友们。因为这个investment GIC的利率是跟着Prime浮动的，而且是Prime-？%，明天Prime都已经是2.5%了，如果你还有钱放在这个GIC里，那基本上是没利息了，应该到银行里重新选择其他利率较高的GIC或其他的投资产品。

每个银行都会有类似的投资产品，如果你的投资产品里也有类似这样与Prime有直接关系的GIC，也应该到你的银行里请你的relationship manager帮你review一下你的投资。

Mortgage是Prime-？%, 降息, 降息

嗬嗬，mortgage的浮动利率现在都是Prime+?%，我说的是investment product中的一种，Variable rate GIC，他的利率是浮动的Prime-?%，BMO的Variable Rate GIC的利率是Prime-2.25%，所以现在才0.25%。

我的意思是提醒大家如果银行里有类似这样的投资产品的话，要考虑重新投资了，放在这些investment product里，还不如放在一般的savings account里呢。

看到最好的Mortgage利息Prime+0.75%=3.25% .很低了
不过还是没有Prime-0.9%=1.6%好哈

赶紧申明一下,现各大银行没有Prime-0.9%,上次给lina添了麻烦

mortgage的浮动利率现在都是Prime+?%, so, choosing variable rate for your mortgage is not a good idea right now, you maybe will have a very high rate for your mortgage in the future. By the way, you can got a mortgage rate at Prime-1% five years ago, Prime -0.9% about 4 years ago, and prime - 0.7% half years ago.

just got the Prime -0.9% about one and half year ago

,and I think the Prime+?% variable rate still the bettter choice right now . It will take few years for the global economy back to stability and growth,so does Canada. the overnight lending rate may be chopped to zero at the next time the bank of canada's scheduled key interest rate announcements date
and also you alwaws have the chance to lock in a fixed rate term if you think the interest rate will go up .
